Here's an update on what has been happening in French.

Kindergarten

The kindergartners have heard The Very Hungry Caterpillar in French (in an abbreviated form). They've acquired or understand the words for egg, caterpillar and butterfly (and maybe even chrysalis!). If your child can't tell you those words that's OK. Understanding the words is a great first step!

egg:  un oeuf (sounds like "un uff")
caterpillar:  une chenille (sounds like "ewn shuh-nee")
a chrysalis:  une chrysalide (sounds like "ewn kree sah leed") - I learned "chrysalide" is the plural of chrysalis in French!
a butterfly: un papillon (sounds like "un pah pee yon")
I'm hungry!: J'ai faim! (sounds like "jay fen")

We've played some games such as "Qui a la fraise?" (Who has the strawberry?), similar to "Who stole the cookie from the cookie jar?" and Memory (using pictures from The Very Hungry Caterpillar). We've also used playdough to create the stages of a butterfly, as you may have seen on Seesaw.

I'm looking forward to seeing families at Open House (September 29th). As I am at 2 schools I can only be at each one for about 20 minutes.

Grades 1 and 2

The first and second graders watched a silly video of a family of bears playing in someone's backyard while I narrated (described) what they saw.  Below is what they heard.

Il y a des ours. (eel ya des oors) - There are some bears.

Il y a une maman ours. (eel ya ewn mahman oors) - There is a mama bears.

Il y a des bébés ours. (eel ya day babay oors) - There are some baby bears.

Il y a combien d’ours? (eel ya kombee-en doors) - How many bears are there?

Il y a un, deux, trois, quatre, cinq, six ours. (eel ya un deuh trwa kaht sank sees oors) - There are 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 bears.

C'est une piscine. (set ewn peeseen) - This is a pool.

La maman ours nage dans la piscine.  (lah maman oors naj dan la peeseen) - The mama bear swims in the pool.

Un ours joue. (un oors joo) - One bear is playing.

Un ours court. (un oors joo) - One bear is running.

We've played some games (toss the ball and say a word, four corners) and drawn pictures of bears doing silly things.

Grades 3 (FES) and 3/4 (MES)

The third graders (FES) and third and fourth graders have heard and read about a day in the life of a dinosaur. (Un Jour dans la vie d'un dinosaure). You can ask your children to read the slides to you! Remember that this is the first time the 3rd graders are reading whole sentences in French.

We've played some games to practice the vocabulary and games on the computers will be coming up next week.

I've had a wonderful first week with your children. I really enjoy their curiosity, playfulness and friendliness.  The first week is a lot about getting to know each other for the first time for new students or learning new things about each other for students who have been together for years.

Below are brief updates on what we have done this week.

Kindergarten

We have practiced greetings and introductions through a song and puppets. The kindergartners were also introduced to a few common words I will use in class (see below) through a movement activity.
They have been given a letter to share with their families.

Levez-vous (leu-vay voo):  Stand up
Asseyez-vous (ahsayzy voo):  Sit down
Arretez (ah ret ay):  Stop

I'm looking forward to seeing your children next Wednesday!

Grades 1 and 2

Students drew some of their favorite foods, animals and things to do. These were shared (or will be shared next week) and students guessed/will guess whose paper I share. This reinforced two phrases:

J'aime (jem):  I like
C'est qui? (say kee):  Who is that?

They have been given a letter to share with their families.

Grades 3 and 4 (MES) Grade 3 (FES)

Students shared some of their favorite foods, animals and things to do. These will be shared on Google slides and students will have to guess whose slide is presented.
Students also created objects that they liked or represented them out of tinfoil. These were also shared or will be shared next week.

Grades 5 and 6 (MES)  Grades 4 and 5 (FES)

Qui aime …?
